Exploring The Jump Off Trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Jump Off is a 6.5-mile round-trip hike starting at Newfound Gap on the Appalachian Trail, near the NC/TN border. It's accessible from Gatlinburg, Cherokee, and Bryson City, and leads to one of the best ridge-top overlooks in the park — views of Mount LeConte, Charlies Bunion, and deep Smoky Mountain valleys stretching in every direction.
Trail Overview
- Distance: 6.5 miles round-trip
- Elevation Gain: ~1,200 feet
- Trail Type: Out-and-back
- Difficulty: Moderate, with some steep and rocky sections
What You'll See
The trail follows the Appalachian Trail through moss-draped fir and spruce forests, past rock formations and narrow ridgelines. The overlook at The Jump Off is the payoff — a wide, exposed cliff edge with views that are hard to match anywhere else in the park. Sunrise and sunset are both worth planning around.
Wildlife & Flora
White-tailed deer, black bears (from a distance), songbirds, and wild turkeys are common. Wildflowers bloom in spring; the foliage in fall is exceptional.
Best Time to Hike
Spring and summer bring lush forests and wildflowers. Fall delivers vibrant autumn colors — one of the best seasons for photography on this trail. Early mornings give you cooler temps, fewer people, and better wildlife sightings. Late afternoon golden hour is worth timing if you can.
